here's what I take from that: these parking meters are not merely relics of a dim and misty past. they were manufactured and installed after pennies were already worthless to all other municipalities.
apparently the manufacturer could customize the label and the coin slot, but the cost of removing the "do not use pennies" label was prohibitive. (?)
jenn: my father and stepmother live there. they were not able to explain how the cost of installing, maintaining, and collecting coins from such meters could even approach the revenue thereby gained. they were also not able to explain the muzak being piped from the otherwise picturesque town hall structure which made the whole town square feel like an elevator. apparently a friend of theirs had written her councilperson to no avail. about the muzak, that is, not the parking meters. the parking meters, as far as I know, have been accepted without protest.

(that's my father's hand parting with his hard-earned penny there, by the way.)
"12 mins for each penny"
"Do not use pennies"

[scratches head.]
So did the penny work in the parking meter?
graymalkin: yes, yes it did.

I think it would be even more delicious if you used Canadian pennies in the meter.
