I definitely recommend a visit, and I highly recommend packing a Japanese-speaking/reading friend. my friend Peter was indispensible.

as for learning Japanese yourself if you don't know it already... man, forget it. that language is HARD. learn a half-dozen romance languages and learn sword-swallowing instead; it will be easier and less stressful.

Mysfit--you're welcome to visit if your fish ever leads you out to the Bay Area, but I'm not in Japan any more... I was just there for two weeks visiting my friend. Came back w/ 2200 digital pictures, though. So it will be a while before I cull them all and get the good ones up. You want to go to Japan, you've got to talk to Peter, my friend who was also our translator. He's more useful than me, anyway.

Here's a useful phrase for you (one of like three I know):
Nihongo ga wakarimasen.
("I don't understand Japanese." You'd think it would be obvious from the glazed look on your face, but the Japanese are like Americans, they assume if they just keep talking, you'll have to understand eventually.)
