Jenn: it's not bamboo, it's just scrubby bits of tree, built to form a makeshift stadium (arena?). They were having a fair of some kind. And that guy tethered to the tree is a steer. He was bigger than he looks in the picture.
He didn't seem quite so sad in person. Maybe because it was extremely hot out that day, so, standing in the shade, ankle-deep in mud, actually seemed kind of pleasant. He didn't seem freaked out by anything, he was just kind of chilled out, "Yeah, I'm standing under my tree." But now that I think about it, maybe that's just how his face is shaped. If I get back that way, I'll ask him.
